Description

Webbing Abrasion Resistance Test Machine

The Webbing Abrasion Resistance Test Machine is a motorized laboratory testing instrument designed to evaluate the abrasion resistance, wear performance and durability of webbing materials used in safety and fall protection equipment. It is suitable for testing synthetic webbing such as nylon and polyester straps used in safety harnesses, lanyards, slings, and Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS).

The tester operates on the principle of controlled reciprocating/cyclic abrasion, in which a webbing specimen is securely held and subjected to repeated abrasion against a specified abrasive surface under a controlled load. Adjustable abrasion speed, load and cycle settings allow the equipment to perform repeatable durability testing over a predetermined number of cycles.

The equipment is intended for applications associated with IS 3521 (Part 1): 2021 – Personal Fall Arrest Systems – Full Body Harness, along with other relevant safety equipment testing requirements.

Working Principle

The webbing specimen is securely mounted between adjustable specimen clamps and positioned against the selected abrasive surface. A controlled load is applied to the specimen, while the abrasion head performs a reciprocating motion over the webbing.

The operator can set the required abrasion speed and number of cycles through the control system. During operation, the digital cycle counter records the completed abrasion cycles. Once the preset number of cycles is reached, the machine automatically stops, helping provide consistent and repeatable test conditions.

Adjustable Specimen Holding Arrangement

The machine incorporates suitable clamps or grips for securely holding webbing specimens during testing. The adjustable arrangement accommodates different webbing widths, with a minimum specified range of 20 mm to 50 mm. A quick-locking mechanism helps prevent specimen slippage during repeated abrasion cycles.

Abrasion Mechanism

The motorized abrasion mechanism provides controlled reciprocating movement of the abrasion head. The abrasion stroke can be adjusted according to the test requirement. Replaceable abrasion surfaces can be used depending on the specified testing application, including:

  • Abrasive paper
  • Metal edge abrasion surface
  • Standard abrasive pads

The replaceable design facilitates convenient maintenance and replacement of worn abrasion surfaces.

Load Application System

A constant vertical load can be applied to the webbing specimen using adjustable weights. The specified load range is 5 N to 100 N minimum, with a load accuracy of ±2%. This arrangement allows the abrasion test to be performed under controlled loading conditions.

Digital Cycle Counter and Control

A digital cycle counter provides monitoring of the abrasion cycles during testing, with a counting range of 0 to 999,999 cycles or higher. The machine incorporates controls for:

  • Start/Stop operation
  • Abrasion speed adjustment
  • Cycle preset
  • Digital cycle counting
  • Automatic stopping at preset cycles
  • Emergency stop

Construction and Safety

The Webbing Abrasion Resistance Test Machine is designed with a robust steel frame and anti-vibration base for stable operation. A corrosion-resistant finish helps support long-term laboratory use. Protective guards are provided around moving components, while an emergency stop switch and motor overload protection enhance operator safety.
