Scope

Leakage Current Measurement Test Setup specification defines the test equipment, sampling method, and specimen preparation procedure for leakage current measurement designed as per BS EN 50397‐1:2020 for Medium Voltage Covered Conductors (MVCC). This is also known as AC High Voltage Test Set 0-40 kV @50mA


Test Equipment

  • AC Source: 48–62 Hz, 0.7U output voltage, output current of 5 mA at least
  • Power 1-40 KV 50mA
  • True RMS Ammeter: Accuracy ±0.1 mA
  • Resistor: 1 kΩ ±5%
  • Copper Wire: 2.0 mm ±0.05 mm diameter
  • Ethanol for cleaning

Sampling

  • Sample taken at least 5 m from cable end
  • Length: 1000 ±10 mm

Specimen Preparation

  • Clean surface using ethanol
  • Immerse in water (20 ±5 °C) for minimum 24 hours
  • Dry specimen before testing
  • Strip insulation 5 ±1 mm at one end
  • Install copper helix electrode at 450 ±5 mm from other end
  • Helix length: 100 ±2 mm

Safety

  • Proper grounding and insulation required
  • Avoid contact with live circuits
